LeRoi Moore (1961 - 2008)

Saxophonist LeRoi Moore of the Dave Matthews band passed away last night at the young age of 46. He was in a severe ATV accident back in June, and reports say that complications from the injuries he sustained were responsible for his death. Moore had been absent from the Dave Matthews Band's current tour while recovering from his injuries (including a recent show in Louisville). He died in Los Angeles, where he was to start an intensive physical rehabilitation program.

I'm a big fan of the Dave Matthews Band, so this news hits close to my heart. I always thought they had one of the more interesting sounds around, due largely to Moore and violinist Boyd Tinsley, as both saxophone and violin are somewhat rare in rock music. Moore, therefore, was an integral part of their sound, and was extremely versatile. He regularly played the full range of saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) as well as various other wind instruments, such as flute, bass clarinet, and penny whistle.

I suggest you listen to some Dave Matthews Band today in remembrance. You can start with this live clip of the tune "Stay"
