You're Welcome, Radiohead.

The word on the street is early reports are showing that 1.2 million people downloaded Radiohead's new album In Rainbows this past Wednesday. That's 1.2 million copies sold in one day. They sold 300,000 more albums in one day than Kanye West sold in a whole week with his latest release. Damn, that's some clout right there. But of course, you won't see In Rainbows on any charts because apparently, Radiohead's website is not "a registered chart reporting retailer."

But what about the fact that many people probably downloaded it for free because of Radiohead's "pay what you want" policy? Radiohead has reported that most people paid "something" for the album, and that the average person paid about 4 Pounds (that's around $8.10). Multiply that by 1.2 million, and Radiohead cleared somewhere in the ballpark of 9 million dollars. Considering that digital sales incur virtually no overhead costs, that all advertising was solely by word-of-mouth, and that they don't have a record label shaking them down, that's 9 million dollars directly into their pockets. Hey Radiohead, have fun sailing your new yachts to your private islands. You're welcome.

The album is amazing, by the way.
