October 19 marks the U.S. release date of
Control, the biopic of late
Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, who committed suicide in 1980. Despite having released only 2 studio albums, Joy Division's moody, post-punk sound literally changed rock music forever and has propelled them to legendary status in the UK. They never got the recognition they deserved in the U.S., but few other bands have had such an extensive influence on music across multiple generations. They were basically the late 70s, UK version of Nirvana. Today, seemingly more than ever, Joy Division's music continues to be a model for bands like Interpol, The Strokes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Killers, among many others. Listen to some Joy Division today. You might think they sound like a lot of other bands. Well, that's because a lot of other bands are trying to sound like
them. Did that make sense?
