Stranded In Raleigh

What better way to kick off our new blog than with a harrowing tale from the road?

This past Friday night, we were in Raleigh, NC, where we played a show at the Pour House. When you venture into unfamiliar territory, you never know what to expect when you show up for the gig. Fortunately, we played well (which was a relief since it was our first time playing together in over a month) and had a receptive audience, which is about all you can hope for when you play a city for the first time. We also had a wonderful host, banjo monster Hank Smith from Barefoot Manner, who graciously allowed us to crash at his home.

Things started going downhill after piling into Myron's car for the drive home on Saturday. About an hour outside of Raleigh, the engine let loose a mysterious "pop" (which is never good), and the car's temperature gauge spiked rapidly. After pulling over and finding coolant all over the road and engine, and that the car wouldn't start back up, we waited for hours on the side of the interstate for a tow truck to show up and drag us back to where we started. Hank again offered his home and extraordinary hospitality to us smelly and weary travelers until we got everything sorted out. We spent Sunday and Monday desperately trying to get ourselves back on the road, as the car got towed from garage to garage. Everybody seemed to want to take advantage of our bind and screw us royally. Finally, Myron lucked into a little "mom and pop" type place that was able to fix the old gal up for about 1/3 of what other mechanics were trying to charge. We set out for Louisville once again on Monday evening, after having our entire lives put on hold for 3 days, and drove through the night, arriving back home early Tuesday morning. The whole experience could have been many times worse, especially were it not for having generous friends and a roof over our heads, but it goes to show that nothing is certain when you're out on the road.

Oh yeah, we also got a speeding ticket on the way home. When it rains, it pours.

Here's our setlist from the show:
