Bruce Hornsby Playing Giant Steps?
Believe it. I'm not a huge Bruce Hornsby fan, but I do own a couple of his albums, and I certainly respect his overall body of work. He's indeed a pianist that can't be nailed down. I'm also aware of his roots in jazz and improvisation, but nevertheless, I was almost shocked to read that next month he will be releasing an instrumental trio record with jazz giants (and I mean that in every sense of the word) Jack DeJohnette and Christian McBride. Check out clips from the album, titled "Camp Meeting," on Bruce's website (link above) or Barnes and Noble. Bruce isn't exactly blazing any new trails here, so don't expect to hear any mindbending Keith Jarrett or Brad Mehldau style playing, but it doesn't sound half bad. Better than I expected, anyway. On paper, at least, he succeeded in creating one of the more interesting projects I've heard of lately, and I'll buy it when it comes out.

He played at a jazz festival in saratoga, and it was pretty much all his pop tunes. He did a solo piano tune, some standard I don't remember, but it was pretty impressive. It didn't really indicate how well he would play with a group(especially THAT group), but he knew his way around the changes pretty well.
By the way, can I contribute posts to this blog? I am also in the band.
